The constant need for speed is always a vital factor when building any internet application. With the support of a CDN service you would cut load times in half but it comes with a very hefty price. In today’s update, I would like to talk about what we currently use that helps save money and offers the highest amount of performance.
What if there was something cost efficient… scratch that, FREE that would be the answer to basic site-serving CDN needs? I would like for you all to meet CloudFlare. You give them five minutes and they’ll supercharge your website.

We’ve turned to CloudFlare to manage our traffic between some of our public servers once we go live. CloudFlare automatically optimizes our delivery so our visitors get the fastest page load times and best performance. There is also a robust system that block threats and limit abusive bots and crawlers from wasting bandwidth and server resources. The result: we see a significant improvement in performance and a decrease in spam and other attacks during testing.
For our media content storage and delivery, we turned to RackSpace’s CloudFiles. We turned to CloudFiles for the simple fact that we pay for what we use. And what we pay is all not that bad. There is not dollar amount towards the number of requests, 15¢ per five GB of storage, 18¢ per GB of outbound traffic, and 8¢ per GB inbound. Their API is extremely flexible and can be compared to what amazon offers. CloudFiles will be fully tied into our application and we hope our users enjoy the delivery performance.
